As we approach the 60th anniversary of the mainframe, one of the biggest priorities for the mainframe community is finding ways to nurture the next generation of IBM Z technicians and administrators. That's why I think it's important to highlight and acknowledge the wide range of support and resources available through IBM. Many of these can be found through IBM's Employer Resource Hub which has a focus on inspiring, connecting, training and growing IBM Z talent globally.
Inspire
Go onto the hub and you will notice a variety of programs and initiatives designed to inspire the next generation to consider the mainframe as a career (even before they formally join the world of work).
IBM Z Career Connection events:
These events give employers and executives who work within mainframe user organizations an opportunity to meet and present to local students to fire up their curiosity about mainframe computing and the career pathways it offers. IBM Z Career Connection (zCC) events are organized at universities and learning institutions around the world. They bring students and potential employers together and encourage learning experiences delivered through the IBM Z Xplore platform. Students are inspired to earn industry-recognized badges and prepare for a potential future in mainframe computing.
IBM Z Student Ambassador program:
This initiative gives students around the world a chance to become part of an elite leadership program that's tailored to their personal growth and professional advancement. IBM Z Student Ambassadors get the chance to play a pioneering role in their universities and communities. As well as achieving mainframe technology certifications, they can network with industry experts and like-minded peers while developing key leadership skills. They have an opportunity to be the face of IBM Z within their educational institutions by spearheading events and workshops as well as initiating an IBM Z club. This program is open to university, college, or diploma students in computer science or related technical fields. It's a great way to kick-start a mainframe career, you can find out more here.
The IBM Z Xplore platform:
This is an important and evolving online learning platform that gives new and existing mainframe users learning resources to upskill, reskill and learn new mainframe-related skills. It is completely free, with learning materials available all year round along with IBM zSystems access. Progressive learning paths provide users with the ability to earn digital badges and take part in hands-on challenges with rewards and a leader board. You can sign up to IBM Z Xplore here.
Connect
To help mainframe user organizations connect with potential new recruits, IBM is supporting a growing list of no-cost virtual IBM Z careers fairs around the world. The aim is to help employers find new candidates who are over 18 and seeking full time positions, internships and apprenticeships in enterprise computing. The careers fairs are open to applicants that have completed the IBM Z Xplore Fundamentals & Concepts Courses and received their Concepts badges. Employers can schedule time to interact with quality candidates via chat and video interviews. Find out about forthcoming careers fairs here.
Train & grow
A variety of tools and resources are available to help both new hires and existing mainframe workers build their skills, network with their peers, find mentors and become mainframe advocates.
Global Skills Accelerator:
This helps new and current employees acquire the knowledge and skills to become Mainframe System Administrators and Application Developers. The Global Skills Accelerator Program combines on-the-job training, mentoring, and success coaching for participants and managers. Constructed in partnership with global employers, the program covers both mainframe-related technical proficiencies as well as important soft skills like communication, team work and problem-solving. It has helped over 70 employers worldwide build a sustainable workforce for IBM Z.
Mainframe Skills Depot:
This provides access to self-paced hands-on learning tracks across multiple mainframe job roles (and includes live access to labs on IBM Z servers). Through the Mainframe Skills Depot, employees can tailor their learning around three primary job roles - Mainframe System Administrator, Mainframe Application Developer or Modernization Architect. They can earn industry-recognized badges and credit certifications to build in-demand skills.
New to IBM Z:
This is a professional user group for new mainframers. It helps those who are new to the platform match up with IBM Z mentors as well as connect with other newcomers like themselves (including via regular meet ups). They can also participate in building their personal profile and brand by advocating for IBM Z and LinuxONE in a variety of ways through the IBM Z Advocacy Hub.
There's no doubt the IBM mainframe has staying power. While continuing to support mission-critical applications in key verticals from banking and financial services to government and defense, the platform is evolving to embrace the cloud, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. Maintaining the talent pool of people around the mainframe is just as important as evolving the technology. The next generation of technicians needs to be equipped not only with a foundational knowledge of mainframe technology but also with skills and expertise in emerging areas. The opportunities available through the Employer Resources Hub play an important role in nurturing this expertise.
